Language in Action: Alpine Magic

Alpine Magic is predominantly a winter sports programme which allows students to take part in the many alpine attractions of the region. The focus on snowsports is coupled with language learning and general cultural and tourism experiences.

The programme outlined below is available as a complete pre-packaged learning experience, or you can mix and match components from all of our learning adventures to create a tailor made learning adventure to suit your needs.

1.

Travel to Alexandra, from Dunedin or Queenstown.

Welcome and introduction by staff and host families.

With host families.

2.

ESOL: Life on the Street – Survival language for town and around.

ACTIVITY: Street Life – an Urban "orienteering event" in which student pair up with kiwi students to learn survival skills out and about in a Kiwi town.

With host families.

3.

ESOL: "Get in Behind!" A light hearted study of the language found down on the farm.

ACTIVITY: Farm NZ – a Farm Visit featuring merino sheep, cattle and deer a few colourful local identities and their trusty working dogs.

With host families.

4.

ESOL: History, geography and the modern gold rush in Central Otago.

ACTIVITY: A sightseeing tour of some unique features of the region including orchards, vineyards a crayfish farm the Clyde dam and the big clock on the Hill!

With host families.

5.

ACTIVITY: Adventure Central- a day full of seasonal outdoor recreation activities including: Ice Skating, Skiing/Boarding, Mountain Biking, Challenge Ropes Course, Golf etc...

Evening BBQ with host families.

6.

FREE DAY: Weekend day spent with host family. (Includes Optional Ski Trip)

7.

ESOL: Language and culture of education in NZ.

ACTIVITY: "School Days" an afternoon spent shadowing a kiwi student in their school setting.

8.

ESOL: Maori language, history and cultural information for afternoon activity.

ACTIVITY: "Tangata Whenua" – hosted by Dunstan High School Maori studies students– an afternoon spent engaged in cultural activities including haka, poi, weaving etc...

With host families.

9.

ESOL: The language and history and culture behind Kiwi’s Passion for sport.

ACTIVITY: "Sport Central" - With students from DHS students try their hand at a variety of sporting codes favored by New Zealanders including Rugby, Netball, Cricket and others.

With host families.

10.

ACTIVITY: Snowfarming –Travel via the resort town of Lake Wanaka to Waiorau Snowfarm on top of the Pisa Range for the highest Alpine Lodge in the Country. The lodge offers extensive Nordic ski trails and back country skiing as well as an advanced terrain park for experienced snowboarders. Spend the night at the lodge enjoying one of the most fantastic views of the Southern Alps and Mt Aspiring available in NZ.

12.

ACTIVITY: Cardrona Alpine Resort – Travel across the valley to the downhill ski area and terrain park of the Cardrona Alpine resort. Enjoy a day skiing and boarding the slopes. At the end of the day travel over the crown range to Queenstown for a night in lodge accommodation, enjoy late night shopping and a meal at one of Queenstown’s many restaurants.

13.

ACTIVITY: Destination Queenstown – Spend the day exploring the many attractions available in New Zealand’s adventure tourism capital. Including Skyline gondola and luge, Bungee Jumping, Jet Boating, Kiwi Birdlife Park, shopping and enjoying the spectacular scenery as the Mountains meet the Lake. OR Travel to Coronet Peak or The Remarkables Ski Area to enjoy another day in the snow. Return by bus to Alexandra and host families.

14.

Weekend day spent with host family. (Optional Lake Dunstan Eco-Tours Wildlife Cruise)

15.

ESOL: Language and lessons for the afternoon community visits programme.

ACTIVITY: "Community Service" visit a range of community service institutions such as retirement homes, hospitals, emergency services etc...

Home with host family.

16.

ESOL/ACTIVITY: Prepare and plan for an International Evening of culture and food with host families, staff, DHS International students.

17.

Farewell and depart Alexandra.

Via Southwestland world heritage Park, Glaciers to Hokitika.

18.

Trans Alpine Express- NZ most spectacular Alpine train Journey to Chistchurch via Arthurs Pass National Park & Alpine Village

19.
